Tags are small pieces of metadata that can be attached to topics, topic tasks, and goals. These tags provide a mechanism for micro-level categorization of the items. Their purpose is to be used by the underlying code of the app to create inferences amongst things in order to assist in its decision making capabilities. For example, the list of recommended topics are determined by cross checking tags on goals, skill assessment results, and statistics from rounds to assign scores to topics based on what tags they have on them. Ultimately, tags define how relevant something in the app might be for a particular list.
There are two types of tags in My Golf: why tags and what tags. Why tags are shown in red while what tags are shown in blue. Why tags indicate "why you would perform this practice topic" or "why you would want to accomplish this goal." What tags indicate "what you are working on when performing this topic" or "what you are gaining when trying to accomplish this goal."
The other properties assigned to a topic, such as area, category, and phase, help the app make decisions; but those are indicative of the very top level, gross point of view. It is tags that provide the most fine grained means of allowing the app to make the best decisions.
